Femdom Church; 1980s - 04/24/24 11:17 PM

Does any else remember the “Service of Mankind” church at 367 12th Street in San Francisco? It opened around 1980. It was legally set up as Church. It advertised in B/D magazines. They conducted Femdom type rituals and theology.
Has anyone ever been there? The church was in a basement of a narrow Victorian House.

I’m not aware of anyone since who has tried setting up a Femdom Church.

No. Way. That sounds amazing and very SF. I was close to SF in the 80s but was too young to experience it. What do you know? I would love to hear more about it.

We spoke of stables, but I have a secret fantasy about starting my own cult. Please tell me more if you know anything.

It absolutely existed and I remember it well. It apparently still does in some form even if it is only virtual.
See http://www.darkside-goddess.org/

It eventually had a quirky name “Essemian”…a play on “S&M” I assume attached to it. It appeared fairly regularly in the fetish print media of the day in one form or another. That era, pre-internet, saw a lot more “not just a party per se but group types of things” going on. The Till Eulenspiegal Society in NY was an example and there were others.
As an east coaster I was more personally familiar with the Eulenspiegal society and those in that region. I only met one person who claimed to have visited it in California and he said it was a bit “weird”. I asked what he meant and he said “a bit weird like you would expect in San Francisco and a bit normal weird”.
I feel the AIDs epidemic, post 60/70s fatigue, and eventually the internet killed many, maybe even all, of these off.

Eeeeeeeeee! This is so cool. You guys are making my week. I miss SF being the beacon of weird, smart, and cool. I didn't really get to go there much until I was 18+ in the 90s, so I missed this. Can we kick out a nest of Tech Bros and bring this back?

Sort of like NYC, turning into an outdoor shopping mall.

I don't know about the laws in France, but in the U.S. setting up your own church can be financially lucrative and get you all sorts of special privileges.

i can't think of sf as weird smart or cool these days. butatlanta is pretty smart and cool in a southern gothic way. it's also home to more mega churches than anywhere else in the world. maybe MUV could be convinced to turn the Atlanta Dungeon into a mega church. it wouldn't really be that much of a stretch from what it is now. churching the place up would add the benefit of tax exempt status. the thought of a southern gothic femdom church is kind of exciting. i keep picturing Mistress Ultra Violet preaching in front of a giant stained glass window of Little Richard

thank you for posting that link. i really dig how they have kept the old geocities look on it. takes me back to that time period. geocities was one of the first places that i found kink in the 80/90s.

The is wickedly synchronistic.

Several years ago I discussed, in part on Twitter, my desire to start a BDSM church. Several said they'd join. Great, I thought. I need to do this.

It's an undertaking, so it's been postponed several times.

Well, within the past week I received an email from the Universal Life Church congratulating me on like 7 years of being an ordained minister (another thing I forget about) and that reminded me that I need to start this damn kink church.

Maybe once the dust settles after my move I'll start the process.
