Elizabeth Taylor as Domina "Cleopatra" - 06/08/22 03:48 PM

Watching it off and on all day today doing projects around the house. It is a LONG movie (4 hrs. plus). Opulent. Excessive. An eyeful of pre-computer spectacle. The whole Taylor/Burton affair scandal in the middle of it. I was 10 at the time and knew about it. The sexual heat on the screen is amazing. Watch it sometime, especially the second half. Taylor/Cleopatra is a dominatrix and Burton/Antony is the grudging submissive... with his love of vino. NO, don't get me wrong, not because Cleopatra was politically powerful. She was, in the Taylor rendition, sexually powerful.

The both of them were good actors. Not great, good. Attractive. But in this movie it wasn't acting. Their lives at that time were on display.

What do you think?

Interesting. I will have to watch this when I have time.

I was 13 when this movie came out. I fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor precisely because she was so dominant in the film.

I was a kid when the movie came out. The one thing I distinctly remember is that when she sat on her throne I imagined myself kneeling in front of her.

There's another movie, the name of which I've forgotten, with a bar scene where she presses the heel of her high heel shoe into the foot of a man [maybe Frank Sinatra?] to make a point or something. That image is hard-wired into my head.

She was a true Goddess to us early teen subs.

Stephen M, curious I did a search.

"Butterfield 8"... There's that incredible moment in the bar where she's wearing a svelte black dress and she and Laurence Harvey are fighting. He grabs her by the arm, and she grinds her stiletto heel into his elegant shoe."

The quote is from a story on Roger Ebert's website but not written by him. Here is the link: https://www.rogerebert.com/scanners/elizabeth-taylor-pagan-goddess

Two days ago, I saw bits of Marilyn Monroe in "Seven Year Itch." Yesterday it was Taylor in "Cleopatra." Different type of sexuality, but after each I need a cold shower. LOL!

I saw it a few years ago.

Amazon Prime has brought the magic of 1950s/1960s big budget all star technicolor classics to me.

I don't recall getting that vibe from her character.

Awesome movie though.

I saw the movie some years back. Taylor's pronounced dominance was sexy as hell. Attitude makes sex appeal. Obviously it doesn't hurt if the woman is stunning beautiful to boot.

There have been so many Cleopatra movies, but this was the best. I think the relation to Marc Anthony was historically accurate. However, so was the relation with Caesar, Rex Harrison if I remember correctly, and that relation haa a completely different dynamic.
