The speed hasn't improved. I couldn't get on 5 minutes ago.

I got this message.

The speed here feels decadent.

I haven't seen any blank posts from the cut-paste-format bug.

Plus the board is moderated. The removal of moderation is what set the stage for The Hang turning into a place many people dislike when it used to be a huge watering hole.

I posted the same thing yesterday, but I'm not sure it's true. This site doesn't let you delete or edit old posts.

The problem is that you can do the query in two different ways, and right now we're getting two different results. I'm not sure which one is accurate.

This article talks about the difference between the "thin" and "thick" whois searches:

https://medium.com/@digestize/all-you-need-to-know-about-linux-whois-command-domain-lookup-9d4f5b0b2bd1

Right now the thin query shows that the domain has been extended, but the thick query shows that it hasn't. I've been waiting for the thick record to be updated, so that it matches the thin one, but it hasn't, and enough time has passed that I think it ought to have, by now.

So I don't know what's going on. I think there are three possibilities, but this is pure speculation.

The first possibility is that it really has been renewed.

The second is that the thin record shows the extra year because GoDaddy has claimed it for themselves in the hopes that they'll be able to resell it for a high price on the secondary market.

The third is that this is somehow tied to the grace periods that people get when they don't renew their domains in time.

I think that the secondary market for expired domain names is pretty corrupt, and that insiders like GoDaddy manage to scoop up names that are valuable before the public at large gets a crack at them. In this way, they can mark them up quite a bit. But again, I don't really know.

When you posted yesterday it wasn't true.

I checked the listing via whois late last night and it was.

The excerpt I posted shows what time the database was updated and it was hours ( at least ) after you posted.

I have been using the command line query tools the whole time, which are more accurate than web based searches. And, as I explained above, different servers are returning different results, which you could verify easily on your own by simply running these two commands on a Mac or Linux system:

1. whois maxfisch.com
2. whois -h whois.godaddy.com maxfisch.com

I kind of feel like you've been a little hostile about this for reasons I don't really understand.

You've made strong statements about that site's ownership over the years that I know with certainty aren't true, and now you're making equally strong technical claims that I know aren't true.

I know you're a big supporter of the community, are are coming at this from a good place, but you really don't know what you're talking about, and you have no sense of the line between things you know and things you believe.

But it doesn't matter much. I'm glad everyone has moved here. So you know, fuck off, or don't, or have a mod ban me, or not, I don't really care.

I have been using the unix whois as well.

I didn't see the date change until late last night before I posted.

It was not my intent to write so as to convey hostility. If you got that impression, you have my apology.

Happy Sunday.

... And you won't

That bug got fixed over here years ago so a blank post is literally meant to be blank

My Unix computer is dead so I have to use the windows whois. I do see one registry expiry date in 2020, displayed on the fourth line. I think that the domain has been renewed but the question is why.

We will have the answer in a few days.

Re: MaxFisch.com Domain Name Renewed For 1 Year - 07/30/19 01:10 PM

After the connection to the domain was denied I let whois run for a longer time and looked closer to the results. Bottom line is registration of Max Fisch with GoDaddy expired on 7/26. GoDaddy reserved the domain name for one year more. Right now GoDaddy owns it (the name not the content).

I am afraid the content is gone for good unless somebody stored a copy. Probably at some point during this year GoDaddy will make the name available to the public unless it can reach a private deal in the current period.

Never mind. False alarm.

You could be right about that. At the moment, maxfisch.com snaps right open as fast as it used to . . . to display a blank page. I guess I was too late for the Godaddy message.

While it's difficult to look for a specific message or thread, you can still do some browsing via the I Internet Archive. Search doesn't work, of course, since it displays only one day at a time, but you can read posts.

Unfortunately buying the url will not help to restore the site-content. Without the owners login info there is no way to access the host or the control panel. The url will probably be snapped up by a Japanese tentacle porn site.

Re: MaxFisch.com Domain Name Renewed For 2 years - 07/30/19 04:41 PM

It is back. I checked the registration, it is for 2 years, and there are modifications to the registration. But the content is back and the speed is normal. My advice to everybody is that at the minimum save everything you care about, not only PMs.

Indeed the renewal was done again today and it was upped to 2 years.
