Progressives Unveil New Bill to Investigate How Anti-Trafficking Law Has 'Demonized and Harmed' Sex Workers

"Last year I warned that forcing websites to take down any mention of sex work would remove agency from sex workers and put them at great risk of violence and abuse, all while making it harder to catch sex traffickers and aid victims of human trafficking," Wyden said Tuesday. "So far, initial reports from cities across the country show that violence against sex workers is rising dramatically and there's little evidence that this law is helping victims."
Khanna noted that "despite these reports, no national study has been conducted to assess the impacts of SESTA/FOSTA on sex workers."

Survivors Against SESTA, a coalition of former and current sex workers, has been documenting the tech sector's response to the controversial bill since it passed the Senate two weeks ago. So far, the coalition has logged at least 18 platforms, including Craigslist and Reddit, that have either shut down, closed verticals or forums, or changed their policies on transactions, content, and language in that time.
The significant change in or outright loss of these sites causes real harm to sex workers, especially those living at the margins, such as transgender women and women of color, says Survivors Against SESTA member Kate D'Adamo, a national policy advocate and community organizer at the Sex Workers Project. Sex workers who advertised their services on Craigslist Personals, My Scarlet Book, Pounced, and similar online classifieds could screen their potential clients and determine whether or not it's safe to schedule a session. Through these type of online service sites, people who trade sex can get identifying details from their clients—names, email addresses, phone numbers, and usernames, for example—and do a bit of digging online to find out more about their history interacting with sex workers.
And that's where platforms like Reddit, Hung Angels, and VerifyHim, a screening site for online daters, came in. Those online spaces gave sex workers a way to share more information about those potential clients, as well as exchange safety tips, tech advice, and support, she says.

Some critics of SESTA/FOSTA responded to the new effort by thanking the sponsors while also pointing out that lawmakers were warned of the consequences for sex workers, but some voted in support of the 2018 legislation anyway

A very long time ago I was drifting after finishing school. An ex-lover's mother guided me to a job in Washington D.C. that helped process documents for federal cases. This was before computers hit it big. Anyone could get a job there, as the work involved manually going through hundreds of pounds of documents. Most of my coworkers were lawyers new to DC using the poorly paid grunt job as a stepping stone to getting established in the city. Nobody loves to talk politics more than lawyers in Washington D.C..  There were huge lunchtime bull sessions and since most of the work was mindless the conversations continued throughout most of the day. I learned a lot from those conversations, though at the time many of the things they said sounded bizarre to me, though it proved to be amazingly spot on. One of those things was a lawyer who told me that you just can't pass a law to solve a problem, like a king issuing an edict. All laws have unintended side effects. This SESTA/FOSTA debacle is perfect proof of that. It is tempting to think it is the result of ignorance or arrogance on the part of lawmakers part. I think those two factors were certainly in the mix, but I also prejudice unconsciously closed ears to many warnings. As a child I used to love to watch WWII documentaries and lament "only if the allies KNEW Hitler's plans". When I was older and studied WWII in more depth I learned just about EVERYBODY ( or at least many people ) could see where things were headed in post WWI Europe. However the people who held the power just didn't want to hear it for emotional reasons. That is my guess about what happened here. Enough lawmakers with enough experience to know that laws have unintended side effects. Plenty of people giving them warnings. In addition to arrogance, their emotions blinded them to the warnings, and they also just did not give a shit. They wanted to pass something high profile and feel good, other things being of a secondary concern.

...and they also just did not give a shit. They wanted to pass something high profile and feel good, other things being of a secondary concern.
I'd venture to say this is the main culprit and, not just with Sesta/Fosta. It is all about what looks good to gloat about on paper. The same has happened with "Tough on crime" bills, that throw first time, non violent offenders under the bus.
