I've always wondered if there are sometimes conflicts that arise over provider's names in the same or nearby market if a newcomer has a similar name.

For example, if I am new to a market and am named Mistress Angel Steel, would I be intruding against a Mistress Steel (no first name) already in the same area? And would there be some resulting communications about possible confusion? What about Mistress Steel and Mistress Steal?

No rules that I know of, but generally we don't want to be confused.

Fun fact, I was Mistress Morgan (as in Morgan Le Fay) up until I moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and got my first website. There were A LOT of Morgans and Morganas at the time. In an overwhelming lack of creativity I shortened it to a letter. I thought it was literary like e. e. cummings, JD Salanger, etc.

Simone Kross took her last name when she moved to LA not to be confused with Simone Justice, who took her last name in honor of her Studio and differentiating herself from Simone in Chicago.

When I was in NYC there was a Lady M who changed to Lady Magenta to avoid the confusion. Here in Paris there is a Maîtresse M, but There doesn't seem to be any confusion as she is not totally pro.

So it becomes pretty clear that each person wants to be seen as an individual.

I only know of one person who used the last name of my mentor to hers to add confusion with her femdom education.

That may be the best reply to any post, anywhere, ever. It took me 5 minutes to stop laughing enough to write this.

"I am your ruined orgasm in bulletin board form. Sorry."

Reminded me of this gem:

Thank you, Domina M, for absolutely making my day.

Aw shucks. I know that I make myself laugh, but it is far better to know that there is someone else laughing out there, too.

Now you made my day.

It's funny when people ask about "rules" as thought this industry is any way regulated. Do you think there's some kind of femdom council that will take rulebreakers to task?

In practice, similar names aren't actually that much of an issue. I don't know if you've noticed, but ads generally contain photos! Two Mistresses with the same first name who look wildly different aren't going to have much trouble, especially if they use different titles/last names, are based in different cities, and/or have different specialties. At worst, they come off a bit cliché for choosing such a popular name.

We don't want to be confused with each other, either, and we do strive to distinguish ourselves in various ways. Usually it works.

I probably would not be Maya if anyone had warned me that there was a very big deal Mistress Maya in Chicago when I started. That said, it's never caused any confusion.

I've only heard of two Mistresses with basically the same name in the same city once. It was in NYC years ago and I sessioned with both. One used a first and last name, I'll call her "Mistress Mary Jones." She was mature and in the scene for around a decade. The other was a younger, up-and-coming dominatrix, I'll call her "Mistress Mary." Both advertised in the local BDSM tabloids and early internet sites, and both showed their faces in their print and web ads. Aside from their age differences "Jones" was a tall blonde, the younger domina was a shorter and athletic brunette, and they offered slightly different activities. There was no way a sub would confuse the two, but "Mary Jones" spoke to "Mary" about it. The younger dominatrix changed her name, trying to avoid a hassle. "Mistress Mary," who mentioned the story to me after that said her business was not hurt by the change.
