Yes addicting is probably the right word. My wife thinks I’m crazy and she works out. So do a few of my friends It’s not the fact I try go to the gym 5-6 times a week. It’s more the intensity . It’s hard for me to explain. I don’t enjoy the thought of going to the gym because I know 90 % of the time it’s going to be painful. But if I don’t go I know I will feel like shit so I go and then I feel great when it’s done. I mean like on top of the world. Definitely endorphins kicking in.

I love your second paragraph. That’s it exactly. What you do in your 40s 50s and 60s will set you up for a healthy and active 70s and 80s I am no expert but I think if you are an overweight couch potato going into your 70s it’s very hard to turn things around.

Same.

I find the physical struggle invigorating.

I see a lot of headlines about having more muscle mass keeps you more able and healthy over your entire life.

I also see a lot of inspiring videos of 70, 80, 90 year old people ( including women ) looking very athletic or lifting large weights. Even more inspiring is that someone of them only started training a few years ago. Some of the people in those videos could pass for being in their 50s if they colored their hair.

When I was a teenager I read an autobiography by the man who brought karate to the west after WWII. He lived to a very ripe old age. He wrote that people were surprised he could get up and down his stairs, walk about town, without assistance.

That seemed silly to me at the time, but now I am seeing people I know who don't workout that much get decrepit. I have some joint damage that no doubt would be much worse if I didn't exercise.

Having strength and muscle later in life IS an investment like you wrote. It helps guarantee independence and that you will be more functional.

+1

I was enjoying his posts in this thread...until now.

I thought maybe he got over writing asshole comments like he did on maxifsch.com, but it looks like that was temporary.

Yes, I try to vary it up. I have a super fun gym 300 meters from me. It's all classes, and the coaches are top-notch in getting the best workout from you. I throw in some yin yoga to take a semi-day off. I over-trained for my marathon a few years back, regretted it, and am more cautious now.

You are definitely doing it right. Super fun gym sounds awesome and so close to home is great. I’ve been meaning to get into yoga. It would probably benifit me greatly. I’m not a joiner and I feel like a total incompetent doing yoga but I’ve just got to pull the trigger on it. Irene Boss made a great response to me about all the different types of byoga on MF but alas it’s now gone forever. I’m going to Google yin yoga and see what that’s about too

I was working out hard, fighting in point karate tournaments. Two months after I hit 52, I got beat by an 18 year old. I was old enough to be his grandfather.

So I worked out after the tournament, the next day I woke up with a screaming pain in my back ! Went to the AMA doctor that just gave me some dope, went to a chiropractor that fixed me up, but I was still taking the dope. Prayed to God, and he said I could have anything I I stop the dope. Thought about it. BMW Z4? Naw, already had a fancy sports car. New stereo? Nope. House? Naw, too much work and noisy neighbors....so I decided to adopt a.....CAT ! ! and no more karate frown And no more dope smile

Now that is >>>BAD DOMS<<< ! !
