Because it happened when she was in the middle of extremely public mental breakdowns in the late 2000s. The courts deemed her incapable of making her own decisions at that time when petitioned by those who "cared about her well being".

The same procedure happens for young people with “intellectual disability”/“mental retardation” & older people suffering from Dementia (or other degenerative brain diseases) that interfere with basic decision making skills.

The difference here is Britney has continued to work and function in her career at a high level for at least the past decade while undergoing a ton of mandatory counseling. This is rarely the case for others put in the same legal position. However, Britney's case highlights exactly how difficult it is for someone to get out of this legal status once they have been placed into it.

Aspx sums it up well. And, you are dead on with her father being an unethical prick. I am far too old to have been a fan of her music. But this case is so fucked up, everyone should take notice. It smells like a bunch of pay offs and pocket lining. If she wasn't famous no one would know. How often does this shit go on with wealthy people that remain helpless to stop it? Judges don't want to admit when they've fucked up.
